How to Choose Pure Desi Ghee: 6 Things to Check Before You Buy

Pure desi ghee is one of the most important ingredients in a Pakistani kitchen, and one of the hardest to judge from the outside. Two jars can look alike and taste very different. Here are six simple things to check before you buy khalis desi ghee.

1. Read the ingredient list

Real ghee has one ingredient: milk fat made from milk or cream. If the label lists vegetable oil, flavouring or other additives, it is not pure desi ghee.

2. Know which milk it is made from

A good seller says clearly whether the ghee is made from cow milk or buffalo milk. If a brand is vague about this, ask questions before you buy.

3. Look at colour and texture

Cow milk ghee is usually golden-yellow, while buffalo milk ghee tends to be whiter. Pure ghee is often slightly grainy at room temperature and melts into a clear liquid when warmed. Colour alone does not prove purity, so treat it as one clue and not a test.

4. Trust your nose

Traditionally made ghee has a warm, nutty aroma. A flat, greasy or chemical smell is a warning sign.

5. Check the label and the seller

A trustworthy brand shares the net weight, a contact number and a website, and is happy to answer questions about how its ghee is made.

6. Be careful with very low prices

Making ghee from real milk takes a lot of milk, so unusually cheap ghee deserves a second look. Compare the weight and the ingredients, not just the price.
